1.   Reserve early – Houses in popular destinations like Nantucket rent quickly, so reserve early to get the best prices and choices.

2.   Not every picture is worth a thousand words.  If you are looking at photographs on a website, be sure to ask how old they are.  What has changed since they were taken?

3.   Google Earth is a fantastic tool.  It shows satellite photos of houses and their locations.  You can see a home’s surroundings very clearly, how far it is from the beach, what the adjacent properties are like, etc.

4.   Getting toNantucket:  Since Nantucket is an island, access is via ferry or air transportation.  The Steamship Authority departs from Hyannis, Massachusetts, and operates a ferry which accommodates vehicles and passengers, as well a faster vessel which accommodates passengers only.  The HyLine is another ferry service which also departs from Hyannisand accommodates passengers only.  Air transportation is available from numerous cities (Hyannis, New Bedford, Boston,Providence and others.)  Another reason to book your rental early is that you will have more transportation options.

5.   Check-in/Check-out:  Most owners rent for a minimum of one week during prime time (mid-June to mid-September) with weekend days (usually Saturday) for arrival and departure.  Typical check-in time is 3:00 p.m. with check-out at 9:00 a.m.  This allows sufficient time for cleaning services to properly prepare the home for new arrivals.

6.   Lease Arrangements:  Rentals are secured with a short-term lease which details arrival and departure dates and time, along with the rental amount and payment schedule.  Rental payments are to be paid prior to taking occupancy.  A security deposit for possible damage and excess cleaning is also included and the cancellation policy is described.

7.   What to Bring:  Most homes come fully-furnished with complete kitchens and bed and bath linens.  Pack your bags and bring any items that will make yourNantucketvacation more enjoyable.
